| Ball Persons Wanted for State League Home Games - Thursday, 23 April 2009Our Strikers team is playing in State League 1 this year and as such we require ball girls for the home games. I am looking for girls in the 13 to 15 years age group to volunteer to assist us with this important function. For the girls it is a chance to experience a state league game from the unique position of ball girl and learn a little about the game from this close up opportunity.
Girls interested in nominating would need to be available from 1.45pm (15 minutes before the start of the match) where they will be briefed of their duties and allocated a shirt until 3.30pm. All ball girls will be required to wear shin pads and a mouth guard at all times during the game. The dates of the home games are April 18, May 2nd, May 16th, May 30th, June 13th, July 11th, July 25th, August 8th and August 29th. I am looking for about 10 girls to put on the roster to ensure that we have enough people for each week and that everyone has the opportunity to work on at least two games to consolidate their skills.
If you are interested could you please email Dennis at admin@hockeyalburywodonga with your name, parents names, club, contact phone number and email address as soon as possible. I apologise for the short notice but hope that you will take up this unique learning opportunity.

| U18 Girls Victorian State Championships Results - Monday, 9 March 2009Albury Wodonga have placed 5th in the State following todays finals. In the qualifying match Albury Wodonga defeated Gippsland 2-0 then in the grading final for 5th and 6th they defeated Central State 2-0 to finish the championship in 5th place overall.
Saturday and Sunday Results
Albury Wodonga U18 girls team have put themselves into a good position to progress through to the semi finals following the preliminary rounds of the U18 Victoria State Championships being played at the State Netball Hockey Centre. The locals campaign started slowly on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Melbourne team Western Suburbs. With only one game rest the girls won the next match 1-0 defeating country rivals Murray Valley. Sunday’s games saw a mixed result. The first game was a comprehensive 3-0 win over South West Districts but in the second game they narrowly went down to Outer Suburbs 2-1. The results put the team into second place but have to wait on the result of another game tonight. If they get into tomorrow mornings qualifying final they will face up to arch rivals Bayside, the team they have met in the grand final the past three years. If successful they will play in the grand final at 1.30pm today.
Best players for the Albury/Wodonga contingent have been Rhianna Coleiro, Jade Versteegen, Linda Weatherlake, Mersi Valamios and Sarah Knight . Coleiro, who is the captain of the team, has led by example and Coach Jenny Brown is confident going into the finals “we started slowly but are really coming together now with the young newcomers to the team are stepping up in stature. Our game against Outer was a beaut as they are very dominant and have won some of their other games 14-0, 7-0 and 5-0. They got on top early but we came back and really rattled them in the second half and the girls can’t wait to get another crack at them”.

| Ground Replacement Update - Monday, 23 February 2009As everyone is well aware the fields are currently in the process of being replaced. To date, the old fields were removed through volunteer effort, as were the fences. The old lights have been removed and the entire area tidied. Delaney’s have levelled both fields and installed kerb and guttering. From Monday 23rd February tar will be laid on the fields. This is a precursor to the shockpad being laid and then the carpet for our STI provided Hybrid fields. Fencing will go up shortly as well and lights are to be installed in March. The entire project is on track for an end of March completion. If there are any queries please direct them to the Director for Finance Andrew Leah – he is the Project Manager, or if the queries are more general in nature, to either the President or one of the Board members.

| James Jewell Selected in Australian U17 Schoolboys Team - Tuesday, 6 January 2009Beechworth High School product James Jewell is officially one of the best junior hockey talents in Australia.
Jewell, 16, shone at the recent Pacific School Games in Canberra, playing seven games in seven days, and caught selectors’ eyes with his play at centre-half.
He was rewarded with selection in the Australian Under-16 Schoolboys team that will tour Hong Kong and China in July next year.
He said he enjoyed the challenge of playing at the PSG, which featured all Australian states as well as teams from Japan and Singapore.
“It was quite interesting playing Japan and Singapore, they play different styles of hockey to the Australian states,” he said.
“They’re a bit quicker and more sensible in the way they play and we had to adapt.
“Playing seven games in a row was a real test for the body too.”
The Jewell family will have to raise close to $7000 to fund the trip and James said he was really looking forward to it.
“I have no idea how we’ll raise the money but I can’t wait to go (on the tour),” he said.
Jewell made his debut for the Albury-Wodonga Spitfires senior team last season and said the experience playing in the State League One competition did wonders for his game.
“It was really intense but enjoyable at the same time,” he said.
“It is really good hockey at that level and I certainly learned a lot.”
Meanwhile, Albury High School’s Jocelyn Bartram also enjoyed a stellar PSG carnival and was named as shadow (reserve) goalkeeper for the Australian Under-16 Schoolgirls team.
That team will tour the UK in July but despite missing out on the main squad, Bartram won’t be too upset if she doesn’t make the trip.
“I’ll get another chance to make the team as I’m only 15 and I can try and make it next year,” she said.
“It would be great to go but I won’t be wishing the other goalkeeper any harm.”
Congratulations to both players. |
