Tallangatta hockey girls shine in Melbourne - Sunday, 10 December 2006

During summer, Hockey Victoria ran a state wide junior development program. Victoria was divided into eight zones with Tallangatta falling under North Central Zone. Three local girls, Olivia & Madeleine Hunt and Lucy White made the local squad, called the Strikers, and attended training sessions in Shepparton and Albury.

The program culminated in a tournament at the National Hockey Centre in Melbourne with three round robin matches and a finals play off. As can be imagined, making the team and playing on the same ground that Australia won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games was a huge thrill for the girls.

Maddi and Liv both played in attack and Lucy was one of two goalies for the team. The first round was a tightly fought contest until Liv scored followed shortly after by Maddi. Round one – a 2-0 win. Round 2 saw some excellent saves from Lucy and another goal from Liv, again a 2-0 win. After 2 rounds, the Strikers were well on top of the table and on target to play off in the grand final. Only one other team had managed to score out of their 2 matches.

The temperature in Melbourne was rapidly rising with a forecast cool change not eventuating. Just after midday it reached 39 degrees and the remainder of the competition was abandoned – a disappointing conclusion for the team but wise decision considering it got to 42 (in the shade) that day.

Well done girls!
