THE SCOTS SCHOOL ALBURY
A CODE OF BEHAVIOUR IN SPORT
The Scots School Albury seeks to uphold high standards of personal conduct consistent with the ideals of competitive sport.
The pursuit of excellence in games and the enhancement of positive educational experiences for all students are of paramount importance to Scots’ approach to sport. Scots teams are expected to place the highest priority on players’ safety and to ensure that coaches are fully aware of the Code of Conduct as well as the particular rules and safety requirements in their particular sport. Scots is also expected to provide the necessary facilities in regards to the provision of First Aid and support for injured players. The following Code of Conduct serves as a broad guideline for all who participate in games conducted under the control of The Scots School Albury.
GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS
1. Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat. Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either team.
2. Players should be wholehearted in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the letter and the spirit of the rules or laws. The referee or umpire’s decision is, of course, final and the Captain of the team is the only one who may ask for clarification of a decision.
3. Players shall never resort to unseemly or abusive language.
4. Players should be punctual and well turned out. The home team – and in particular the Captain, should welcome the visiting team and its Captain. At the conclusion of the game, referees, umpires and other officials should be thanked.
5. Players should not applaud the opposition's mistakes.

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS
1. Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents. Negative comments are totally unacceptable.
2. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause.
3. It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire's decision, irrespective of his/her age.
4. Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence or rough or illegal play.
5. Coaching by spectators from the sideline is to be actively discouraged by the official present and encroaching on the field of play is totally unacceptable and must be dealt with by the officials immediately.
6. Adults must remember that games at school level are organised for the benefit of the students concerned and not for adults.
7. Visitors to grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the home team concerning car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators. At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.
8. Adults - parents, students and others - are expected to set an example by their self-control and deportment at matches.
9. Alcohol should not be consumed at Scots School fixtures.

FROM THE SPORTS COORDINATOR

Congratulations on being selected in one of The Scots School Albury sporting teams. Please take note of all the following points and the Code of Behaviour Guidelines. I would anticipate that all students intending to play as a member of a Scots team will sign the Code of Conduct agreement as an indication of their commitment.
Training
Training is compulsory. Your team’s training day, games, coach and relevant
information is distributed at the start of each season.
Please aim to be:
• a learner of the game and its rules
• one who trains as they play
• helpful, supportive, encouraging of others
• committed in all that you do.
Always come prepared with change of clothing and appropriate kit for your sport. The aims of training are to improve your skills and teamwork and to enjoy the game.
Commitment
You have signed up for the whole season. It is a matter of personal honour that you attend all training sessions and games and are punctual. Learn to support and barrack other teams in a sportsmanlike manner. Show responsibility and initiative by helping with equipment at both training and home games.
Courtesy
The staff and assisting coaches at Scots are exceptionally hard working and dedicated on your behalf. Please actively support them. If, due to a major clash, you cannot attend training or a game, please personally see your coach well before the event. When in contact with other schools, remember you represent Scots at all times.
Spirit of the Game
The Scots Code of Behaviour is provided for your reference. A brief summary follows:
• We will always play the game in the right spirit.
• We never criticise the referee/umpire or opponents.
• Any foul play will be severely dealt with at the school level.
• The Captain always thanks the referee/umpire and opposing coach after the game.
• Barracking for teams is to be encouraged. It should at all times be positive and good play from either team applauded.
Appearance
For all games, correct uniform is compulsory, as is the wearing of mouthguards and shin guards.
In conclusion, enjoy your sport this year. Work on your skills and be willing to learn from both your coach and your team. Wear the School colours with pride and strive to be the best you can be.
