| Men's and Women's Senior Teams Successful - Thursday, 17 June 2010Hockey Albury Wodonga teams are celebrating their success at the senior men’s and women’s country championships held over the Queen’s birthday weekend.
The senior men defeated Central Victoria 5-1 in the final after having been beaten by C.V. the previous night 4-1. The Albury/Wodonga team were the standouts having scored 26 goals for and only conceding 6. Coach Matt Bardy was extremely pleased with the way his team played the final “we won the first game against Geelong 7-0 and the guys probably got a bit complacent and were taking things a little too easy which resulted in us losing to Bendigo in the pool game. This was a good wake up for the last pool game in which we beat Ballarat 11-0. It was pleasing that we didn’t take off the pressure after scoring a couple of goals early. In the final we started strongly and scored early in the game and then they played ultra defensive and hoped for a break away. The only sour note to the weekend was an injury to Tony Donnolley who badly twisted both his ankle and knee and is possibly out for a couple of weeks”.
The under 17 boys played in division 2 and won two games and finished a credible 4th.
The two veteran teams playing in division one and two were outpaced by younger legs and came 4th and 5th respectively.
The senior women dominated in Geelong and played off against the Central Victoria Blazers and were crowned country champions after winning 5-0. The second division team lost to Warrnambool 0-2 in their grand final match to come second.
The junior girls teams playing in the Canberra carnival performed better than last year against top opposition. The under 17s came 5th, the under 15s finished 8th and the under 13s came 4th.
The Victorian Country Senior teams were selected from the championships and Albury Wodonga dominated the selections with 11 men and 6 women being selected to compete in the Australian Country Championships to be held in Canberra late in July.
Men:
Andrew Maggs (capt), Ian Beath, Sam McIntosh, Matt Bardy, Dominic Wild, Fergus Dawson, Joel Shepherd, Scott Foley, Matt Sawyer, Tony Donnolley, Tim Jones and Jeremy Payne was selected as an emergency.
Women:
Janessa Leggatt, Emma Knagge, Shelby Thorneycroft, Jade Versteegen, Allison Nicholson and Jo Plowright.

| Four Players to Tour With Australian Country - Monday, 29 March 2010
Spitfires, Ian Beath and Sam McIntosh and Strikers Janessa Leggatt and Josephine Plowright have been selected for the Australian Country Hockey Teams which are about to tour Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
All four were selected after their performances at the Australian Championships in Tamworth last year.
This is the first time Ian and Sam have been selected with Ian coming off one of his best State League seasons where he scored over 30 goals. Sam is only 20 years old but has already established himself as a dominant midfielder within the Spitfires team.
Janessa and Joey are members of the Strikers and both toured Singapore with the Australian Country team last year and are looking forward to enhancing their experiences this trip.
Initial matches for both teams are against Hong Kong Provincial teams followed by one-off test matches against the Hong Kong National teams.
Both teams then travel to Kuala Lumpur where they play Malaysian development teams. The ladies team then play a three match test series against the full strength Singapore National Team while the men have matches against the Malaysian and Singapore Olympic squads.
Players depart on Monday 5 April and return on 19 April which means they unfortunately, will miss the Spitfires and Strikers first round State League commitments in Melbourne. |

| Board of Management Vacancies - Sunday, 24 January 2010
Directors Needed!
Hello to everyone in the Hockey Albury-Wodonga community. We are in need of two Directors to be part of the Board. It's critical to the ongoing success of HAW that we have a full complement of Directors and at the moment we lack a Director of Junior Athlete Development and a Director of Special Events. There is an unfortunate misconception that being on the Board takes up an enormous amount of time, has financial burdens or is simply a lot of hard work. None of these are accurate. The amount of time spent on Board matters is up to the Director and how much time they are willing to put into the role. Ideally most of the work is performed by the committee each Director has, with the Director providing a leadership and management role. Indeed, this is the primary focus of every Directorship – leadership and management. There is no financial burden on any Director.
The Director of Junior Athlete Development is responsible mainly for Minkey and Under 10's. Primarily this role is focused on organising these two competitions and working with the Director of Representative Hockey to assist in the Rep Hockey teams and training. This is really a critical role as it is involved with the next generation of Australian Hockey Stars coming up through Minkey.
The Director of Special Events is primarily focused on events like the Easter Hockey Carnival and the Finals series. Again with the help of a committee this role is to organise the Easter Carnival (with the assistance of the Operations Manager), the Best and Fairest Dinner and to make our finals a special occasion.
If you have a few hours a month to spare to help our Association out by becoming a Director, have some leadership or management skills (or are looking to develop some) then come and join us on the Board of Hockey Albury-Wodonga and help us take hockey to the highest levels!
Angus Beath
